Dancing with the Stars: Theme Song Night Recap

Posted by Elina Uphoff on Saturday, May 25, 2024

Season 23 of Dancing With The Stars is heating up. With no elimination last night, all scores and viewer votes from last week will be added to this week’s scores to determine the first couple to pack their bags on tonight’s live results show.

Yesterday was a television celebration with the 13 duos dancing to their choice of TV theme song. How did your favorite pair score? Read our recap of last night’s show below.

Maureen McCormick & Ardom Chigvintsev

Maureen channeled her inner Marcia Brady and danced a quickstep to The Brady Bunch theme song. Her television mom, Florence Henderson even made an appearance on stage during the performance. Judge Len Goodman called the routine fun and entertaining. All four judges noted Maureen’s improvement in confidence. Bruno Tonioli said it was “deliciously well pitched,” adding that it possessed a 1970’s feel.

Scores: Carrie Ann- 7, Len- 6, Julianne- 6, Bruno- 7 = 26/40

Jana Kramer & Gleb Savchenko

Even with torn muscles in between her ribs, nothing stopped One Tree Hill’s Alex Dupre from stealing the show. She powered through her tango, as Gavin DeGraw performed a live version of “I Don’t Want to Be,” the OTH theme song. Julianne applauded Jana for being a trooper as it is evident she held back her pain during the dance. Julianne also added that Jana has a natural gift. Carrie Ann admits to seeing Jana’s pain, mentioning that everything was a lot less than what she is capable of and recommended she works on her leg extensions.

Scores: Carrie Ann- 7, Len- 8, Julianne- 7, Bruno- 7 = 29/40

Rick Perry & Emma Slater

Rick remains as the underdog in the competition. Him and Emma fell to the bottom of the scoreboard last week and this week was no improvement. The duo did a quickstep to the Green Acres theme song, which Bruno compared to a “bad cold” since you can’t get rid of it. Bruno found Rick’s footwork similar to heavy machinery. Len mentioned that it is a journey going from politician to ballroom dancer and that Perry just needs more polish.

Scores: Carrie Ann- 6, Len- 5, Julianne- 5, Bruno- 6 = 22/40

Calvin Johnson & Lindsay Arnold

No one is enjoying themselves more in this competition than this former football player. Johnson and Arnold foxtrotted their way into America’s hearts to the Family Matters theme song, where Calvin portrayed the character of Steve Urkel. Carrie Ann believes his enthusiasm is contagious. Julianne said he has an unexpected spark and is one of those people who is going to continue to improve week after week. Calvin even got a surprise visit from the real Steve Urkel himself, Jaleel White.

Amber Rose & Maks Chemerkovskiy

The couple danced a Viennese Waltz to the Game of Thrones theme song and although the judges saw that Amber listened to the criticism from last week and worked on the advice they gave her, it wasn’t enough to improve her score. Len was hoping for more ballroom hold and Julianne took notice to the distraction Amber’s shoes made on her overall performance.

Jake T. Austin & Jenna Johnson

Jake and Jenna are supposed to be the season’s young, fun couple; however, they don’t seem to have found the connection needed to succeed quite yet. The two danced the cha-cha to the Go Diego Go theme song, the same show that got Jake got his big break in the business. As much as we are pulling for the duo, there were many out of sync issues and it appeared there was also a lack of energy on the dance floor. Carrie Ann pointed out that Jake was often ahead of the music and Len couldn’t offer a higher score because timing was lost.

Vanilla Ice & Witney Carson

The couple performed a fun foxtrot as Al and Peg Bundy from Married with Children. Vanilla proved to the public that he can learn proper ballroom etiquette and execute it well. Although it wasn’t a flawless performance, all of the judges were able to see an improvement from their previous dance. Len was especially pleased to see more content incorporated in this week’s dance. Bruno suggested that Vanilla be more careful with how he throws his hands away.

Terra Jole & Sasha Farber

Len couldn’t have said it better himself, “Diamonds come in small packages.” Terra is a fighter on the dance floor, despite her little legs. She carries a fearless presence, which is why her routines are always so strong. The pair performed a strong quickstep to the Bewitched theme song, each move choreographed to perfection. This dynamic duo will certainly be one to watch in the upcoming weeks.

Scores: Carrie Ann- 8, Len- 7, Julianne- 8, Bruno- 8 = 31/40

Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds & Allison Holker

If you didn’t think the X-Files song could be sultry, think again. Babyface and Allison pulled it off during their Argentine Tango. Julianne called Babyface an “unexpected surprise,” admitting that he will have one of the most fascinating journeys on the show. Len applauded the two for playing their characters right and capturing the true theme of the evening. Carrie Ann said that Babyface understands the music being a producer and that helps. She called it his phrasing and complimented him wholeheartedly.

Laurie Hernandez & Val Chmerkovskiy

Laurie and Val are Jimmy Kimmel’s pick to win this season’s mirror ball and without a doubt, the couple have also become a fan favorite with viewers at home. They jived to the DuckTales theme song, a very fun and bubbly dance that required a lot of energy. Len said that the performance was full of “snap, crackle, and pop” while Julianne referred to the teenage Olympian as “Disney’s Beyonce.” Bruno called Laurie a leading lady, which we all knew from watching her represent the United States in Rio this past summer.

James Hinchcliffe & Sharna Burgress

Tying for the top score last week with Laurie, the race-car driver is set to prove that he deserves to be in the competition. Dancing a Walking Dead themed Paso Doble, James and Sharna remained completely in sync throughout their performance, which is what Carrie Ann immediately recognized, calling it impressive. Len believed that the paso got lost with the production on stage. Being his old fashioned self, Len explained that he is judging the dance and wants to see steps that he is aware of.

Marilu Henner & Derek Hough

We wouldn’t expect anything other than Marilu foxtrotting to her theme song from Taxi. Derek put a lot of effort and creativity in the choreography, which Len complimented as he applauded the performance for being so smooth and stylish. Bruno loved the lines and shapes that were involved in the routine. Carrie Ann was happy she got to see expression along with a lot of content.

Scores: Carrie Ann- 7, Len- 8, Julianne- 7, Bruno- 7 = 29/40

Ryan Lochte & Cheryl Burke

Last but not least, Ryan and Cheryl. We are pleased to say that there were no protestors or interruptions during Ryan and Cheryl’s dance this week. Their playful quickstep to The Muppet Show theme song was the perfect routine to cut ties with last week’s incident and move forward with the competition. Julianne suggested that Ryan works on the posture of his back, as it is distracting during his performance. Carrie Ann added that he needs to improve his footwork, but appreciated the joy he expressed on stage after everything that has happened.
